Women's Professional Soccer

In April of 2009, St. Louis will be home to a Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) team — along with Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New Jersey/New York, and Washington D.C.

Our mission?  To be the premier women's soccer league in the world, and the global standard by which women's professional sports are measured.

And we are well on our way…

Since league investors formally announced the formation of a new North American professional women's soccer league last September, a number of exciting announcements have followed, including:

  • Unveiling of the league's name — Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) — and logo, depicting the silhouette of women's soccer pioneer Mia Hamm

  • Launch of the league Web site at www.womensprosoccer.com, social networking MySpace and Facebook pages, and video sharing YouTube channel
  • Investment in the league by NBA star Steve Nash and former Yahoo! President Jeff Mallett
  • Hiring of former U.S. WNT coach Tony DiCicco as head coach of the Boston Breakers, which will play their home games at Harvard Stadium
  • Hiring of former WUSA and Northwestern University coach Marcia McDermott as general manager of the Chicago WPS team
  • Hiring of former WUSA championship coach Ian Sawyers as head coach and general manager of New Jersey/New York Sky Blue
