St. Louis is Next Up for New Soccer Team

CHESTER, Pa. — Major League Soccer introduced Philadelphia as its 16th team Thursday, with a gala bash in an old electrical plant on the waterfront of this city just south of Philadelphia's airport.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber said St. Louis is now at the front of the line to be team No. 17.

"I've said this many times before, and I'll say it again," Garber said. "We'd like St. Louis to be our next team. ... We want a team in St. Louis. We need teams in the Midwest."

Garber emphasized that the only impediment — "The last piece of the puzzle" — is the financial depth of Jeff Cooper's ownership group. Solve that problem, he reiterated, and St. Louis will get a team.

LOUIS (Jan. 17, 2008) – Formally announced in September, the much-anticipated women’s professional soccer league launching in Spring 2009 with one of seven teams based in St. Louis, now has a name, Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS).  With the unveiling of the league logo and launch of its website, www.womensprosoccer.com, WPS made its official debut today at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) annual convention, taking place through Saturday in Baltimore, Md.

ST. LOUIS — Friday night at the Missouri Athletic Club, Jeff Cooper served as the keynote speaker at the annual Hermann Awards banquet, which honors the top college soccer players in the nation.

Cooper's words resonated, and I wish everyone in the local soccer community could have heard them. Much of Cooper's speech addressed the heritage, history and role that soccer plays in the St. Louis culture. Cooper is passionate about the game and dedicated to bringing a Major League Soccer expansion franchise here.

M.L.S. Playoff Picture Coming Into Focus

The two division leaders in Major League Soccer — D.C. United in the East and Houston in the West — and New England have clinched playoff berths.

This season, the playoff scheme has been adjusted. Instead of the top four teams in each conference advancing, the top two teams in each conference will qualify, along with the four other teams with the most points, regardless of conference. The playoffs are scheduled to begin in late October, with the championship to be played Nov. 18 in Washington.
